PUERTO MALDONADO, is one of the places hidden away in the jungle of Madre de Dios, where will find that rivers are the main highways of the jungle, where the weather is hot and where rain is more than welcome as it brings a quiet and comfortable relief from the heat. Here the spoken language is not quechua as in the ands, but different native dialects, being understood only by the people born in these areas.
We will navigate along the Madre de Dios river until the Heath River Wildlife Center which belongs to the natives of the Ese Eja community in the eastern zone, near the border between Peru and Bolivia, 75% of the riverside is covered by primary forest, the natives themselves will be our guides and take us to explore the forest in the areas around the lodge, looking for different species of monkeys and hundreds of birds that live in the area.
We will visit the Parrot and Macaw Collpa, and while on the way we will be able to see families of Capybaras along the river banks (the biggest rodent in the world, they can weigh up to 55 kilos) to watch the Macaws we have a specially designed hide out where we can observe small emerald green and electric blue parrots, soon the big Macaws with fantastic colored feathers of deep red and brilliant green arrive. The birds arrive at the collpa everyday to feed on the red clay.
Lake Sandoval is a beautiful place to rest and enjoy, where we will spend the night at a lodge located in the lake, this will let us observe the huge variety of birds, flora and fauna that live in the area, and the lodge is part of all this beauty where they have done a fantastic job of conserving the ecosystem.
